Upward Bound (Five-week session)

Upward Bound is a pre-secondary program designed to motivate and provide academic skills for eligible students interested in education at the secondary level. The program provides opportunities for participants to develop greater proficiency in pre-secondary literacy and arithmetic skills and ultimately in their secondary education pursuits. Upward Bound serves students who performed below expectations on the Extension’s pre-GED or placement examinations in Language Arts and Mathematics. GED Examinations

The GED is a set of five exams encompassing the core subjects that are taught in traditional high schools. The GED is for students, who for some reason or another, did not complete high school. When the GED exam is passed, the student will receive a Diploma of General Educational Development that is the equivalent to a high school diploma. It can help a person get a job, and even help them get into postsecondary institutions.
The five parts of the GED consist of language arts-writing ;  language arts-reading; social studies; math; and science.

  1. The language arts-writing portion of the GED focuses on skills such as sentence structure, grammar (both print and mechanical). The GED also goes over proper usage of words and the organization of sentences and essays.
  2. The language arts-reading portion of the GED focuses on reading comprehension by having the student read several different types of documents including poetry, drama, nonfiction, fiction, and community and career documents.
  3. The social studies portion of the GED focuses on Belizean History, Geography, Civics, and Economics.
  4. The math portion of the GED focuses on Measurements and Geometry, algebra, data analysis/statistics, and number operations and number sense.
  5. The science portion of the GED focuses on Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth and Space Science.
