This week, students of the Culture & Change class at SJCU embarked on an enriching educational journey to the National Heritage Library in Belmopan. The visit was designed to offer a hands-on learning experience that complements their classroom studies on the cultural, political, and economic transformations that have shaped Belize over the years.
At the library, students delved into a treasure trove of historical media, including old newspaper articles, photographs, and other archival materials that document the nation's dynamic history. The opportunity to engage directly with these primary sources allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of how societal changes unfold and are recorded over time.
The field trip also served a dual purpose, as it provided practical preparation for an upcoming class project. Students are working on a digital album assignment that will showcase curated images and narratives reflecting Belize’s evolving identity. The visit equipped them with the skills to handle and analyze archival materials, ensuring their work reflects both accuracy and respect for the nation’s historical artifacts.
Lecturer Linette Sabido, who organized the trip, emphasized the importance of experiential learning: “By stepping outside the classroom and immersing themselves in historical resources, students can better appreciate the richness of Belize’s heritage. This experience not only enhances their academic understanding but also instills a sense of pride and responsibility in preserving our history.”
The visit to the National Heritage Library is a testament to SJCU’s commitment to innovative and impactful education. Through initiatives like these, the university continues to inspire its students to connect with their roots, critically analyze societal changes, and contribute meaningfully to the ongoing narrative of Belize.
