Fortis Hydro Dam and Nexgen welcomes High School Wildcats!

On 7th April 2025, our Computer Science majors embarked on an enlightening and educational field trip to two major tech-driven sites, which provided them with invaluable insights into the practical applications of their studies. This excursion was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world technology, allowing students to witness firsthand the integration of computer science in various industries.

Their first stop was the impressive Fortis Hydro Dam, a remarkable facility that plays a crucial role in the energy sector. During their visit, students had the opportunity to explore how advanced computer systems are utilized to support energy production processes. They learned about the intricate control mechanisms that manage the flow of water and optimize energy output, ensuring that the dam operates efficiently and sustainably. In addition, the students were introduced to the sophisticated data monitoring systems in place. These systems are essential for tracking energy production levels, assessing environmental impacts, and maintaining safety protocols. The tour included discussions with engineers and technicians who explained the importance of renewable energy sources and how technology is pivotal in achieving sustainability goals.

Following their enlightening experience at the hydro dam, the group proceeded to visit Nexgen, one of Belize’s tech companies. At Nexgen, students received a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the various cybersecurity protocols that protect sensitive information and ensure the integrity of communications. They were introduced to the company’s robust network infrastructure, which supports a wide range of services including broadband internet and cloud solutions. The visit included interactive demonstrations of the technologies employed to safeguard networks against cyber threats, highlighting the critical role that cybersecurity plays in today’s interconnected world. Additionally, the students engaged in discussions about the innovation driving Belize’s digital connectivity, including the development of new technologies and services that aim to enhance the user experience and expand access to digital resources across the nation.
