On April 7, 2025, our dedicated Humanities majors from the High School embarked on an enriching journey to the picturesque town of Benque Viejo del Carmen, where they engaged in a day filled with cultural immersion and creative exploration that promised to broaden their understanding of the rich tapestry of Belizean culture!

Their first stop on this enlightening excursion was the renowned Poustinia Land Art Park, a unique and inspiring site that serves as a testament to the powerful intersection of nature and artistic expression. Here, students were not merely passive observers; they actively engaged with various art installations that beautifully reflect the diverse environment and cultural heritage of Belize. The park features an array of artworks created by both local and international artists, each piece inviting contemplation and interaction. As they wandered through the lush landscapes, students discussed the significance of land art in promoting environmental awareness and the ways in which these installations serve as a dialogue between the natural world and human creativity.

Following their immersive experience at the art park, the students made their way to Stonetree Records, a hub of Belize's vibrant music scene. Here, they gained invaluable insight into the intricate relationship between music and cultural preservation. The visit included a fascinating discussion about the history of Belizean music, its roots in various cultural traditions, and how contemporary artists are keeping these traditions alive while also innovating new sounds. Students had the opportunity to hear live demonstrations and even participate in a brief workshop, where they learned about the recording process and the importance of sound in storytelling and cultural expression. This experience highlighted the role of music as a powerful medium for cultural identity and community cohesion.

The final stop on their journey was at Cubola Productions, a local publishing house renowned for its commitment to storytelling and literature. Here, students delved into the world of local publishing and learned about the critical role that literature plays in shaping national identity and preserving cultural narratives. They explored the process of bringing a story to life, from writing and editing to publishing and distribution. The discussion emphasized the importance of literature in reflecting the diverse voices of Belize and how these stories contribute to a greater understanding of the nation’s history and values. Students left Cubola Productions not only with a deeper appreciation for the written word but also inspired to consider their own roles as storytellers in their communities.
