On February 11th, St. John’s College Junior College-University proudly hosted a highly successful Health Fair, dedicated to promoting holistic well-being for our vibrant community of students, faculty, and staff! This event was designed not only to inform but also to inspire a deeper understanding of health and wellness in all its forms.
Our keynote speaker for the day, the esteemed Maryam Abdul Qawiyy—who is not only a prominent news anchor and a morning host for 7News but also a former Miss Belize delegate and a certified yoga instructor—delivered an incredibly insightful talk on the multifaceted importance of mental, spiritual, and physical health. Her presentation emphasized the interconnectedness of these elements and how they collectively contribute to a person’s overall quality of life. Following her talk, she led an engaging yoga session that captivated attendees, sharing practical techniques for mindfulness and relaxation that participants could incorporate into their daily routines to manage stress and enhance their mental clarity.
In addition to the keynote address, the Health Fair featured several informative booths hosted by our enthusiastic student clubs, along with vital contributions from local organizations such as the Red Cross and the Blood Bank. These booths served as platforms for education and engagement, where students learned about crucial health topics, including:
The importance of blood donation - Highlighting how each donation can save lives and the ongoing need for blood in our communities.
Monitoring sugar and blood pressure levels - Providing insights into how regular monitoring can prevent serious health issues and promote proactive health management.
The effects of substance abuse - Raising awareness about the risks associated with substance use and offering resources for support and recovery.
We extend a huge thank you to Maryam and everyone who participated in making this event a truly enriching experience for all involved! The collaborative efforts of our faculty, staff, and students exemplified the spirit of community and the commitment to prioritizing health and well-being. Let’s continue to champion and prioritize our well-being in all aspects of life, fostering a culture of health that encourages everyone to thrive both personally and collectively. Together, we can build a healthier future for ourselves and those around us.
